Tear up your lawn
According to Grist.org, there's a "delawning" movement afoot. About time! The lawn, a uniquely American invention, is a horribly wasteful land use choice. Lawns suck up water in areas that desperately need it (not surprisingly, this is a pressing issue in California), and usually require chemical fertilizers and maintenance with fossil fueled machines. Next up: golf courses!

There are some examples of gold courses that use native plants and grasses in the course and use artificial greens for the putting area. I've seen desert golf courses in Mexico and I'm sure that there are some examples in the U.S.
