First of all, remember that fuel cells are not energy generators. Energy must be used to obtain the hydrogen (there may be some ways around that that use algae to produce it). Many fuel cells, however, rely on the use of an expensive heavy metal catalyst, such as platinum. Scientists in the UK have come up with a method that uses enzymes from bacteria and fungi to catalyze the same chemical reactions. They have powered a digital watch with their invention. Future research could yeild smaller, less expensive gadgets with less environmental impact.
It was only a few months ago that someone from MIT told me that fuel cells would never be a viable option because of the necessary heavy metal catalyst. Well, where there's a will, there's a way.
