High winds in Santa Ana spread wild fires

Welcome to the Western U.S., where fires are a natural part of the landscape. Although fires occur naturally in forests of the Eastern U.S. as well, these sunny, dry pine forests and prairies are powder kegs on which people have decided to build. Fire happens, mudslides happen... things get destroyed. As for the great, cold Northeast and MidWest, we just live through the cold and forget about the fires of the colonial era, which could return with our growing forests.
