Community Redevelopment in Detroit

A very comprehensive article on the redevelopment of Detroit's Tireman neighborhood, also known as the Black Bottom when the city and businesses enforced segregation of neighborhoods (by using restrictive covenants on deeds and red-lining). One of the most interesting things pointed out in this article is that neighborhoods that have the greatest chance for success in redevelopment recieve funding, while some neighborhoods that are in greater need of redevelopment may recieve little or no aid at all.

An excellent resource on the origin of Detroit's abandonment and a great lesson for other cities: The Origins of the Urban Crisis by T.J. Sugrue.
