That last post reminded me about Curitiba, Brasil, also known as the world's Ecological Capital City for its innovations in systems of transportation, recycling and green space. I visited there about three years ago and I must say it is quite impressive. You'd never know that you were walking around a city of 2 million people. Other than the invasive species in the parks and some of the favelas (mas, todo mundo tem favela, verdade? ninguém é imune...), it serves as an excellent example for the rest of the world.
More here, but this seems to be a better place to start.
