Many urban birds are not migrating anymore, according to a study published recently in the journal, Ecology. Are changes in migration due to genetic or environmental factors or both?
Have you noticed the resident populations of Canada Geese? Yeah...
The link provides an excellent summary of the study's findings. One interesting finding is that the advantage to non-migration is more advantageous for male birds. These urban males mature sexually earlier than their forest counterparts.
Remember, this study was done on one bird species. More research will have to be carried out on other species to determine the general trends- if any- of non-migratory urban birds.
Sounds like a science project, kiddos!

Encyclopedia of Life
A project of mammoth proportions was announced today (ha ha). The Marine Biological Laboratory and other institutions have set off to document all 1.8 million named species on the planet.
" The MBL's Biodiversity Informatics Group is developing the software that will seamlessly aggregate data from thousands of websites into species pages in the Encyclopedia of Life. Over the next 10 years, the Encyclopedia will create Internet pages for all 1.8 million species currently named as well as expedite the classification of the millions of species yet to be discovered and cataloged. The pages will provide written information and, when available, photographs, video, sound, location maps, and other multimedia information on each species. Built on the scientific integrity of thousands of experts around the globe, the Encyclopedia will be a moderated wiki-style environment, freely available to all users everywhere."

Chimps evolve!
Behaviorally, that is. Primatologists have observed spear-wielding chimpanzees for the first time. So we aren't the only animals with this trait.
