Boston plans to plant 100,000 new trees by 2020 to increase the urban forest canopy by 20%.
In a related story, one month ago New York City announced its plans to plant 1 million trees... although I cannot find a link to the site as every article link in google news has been removed. Hmmmmm...
Let's hope that these initiatives also take into account that trees are not the only types of plants that are capable of absorbing pollution and storm water. There may be some sites in cities where rain gardens, bioswales, and maybe even a nice park could be more appropriate than trees alone.
The catch with other options: making them aesthetically appealing and not attracting undesirable behaviors.
