Move to ban trawling blocked
A motion that could have helped to save benthic fishery habitat from ecologically and economically destructive bottom trawling was blocked. Most countries that still operate trawling fleets heavily subsidize them and would otherwise not be profitable. Of course, alternative methods of shrimping have been and must be continued to be explored. Furthermore, finding economical ways to retrofit trawling fleets with new, more efficient catching devices is necessary (efficient at catching target species, that is).
