"When the average North American sits down to eat, each ingredient has typically traveled at least 1,500 miles from farm to plate."
To say nothing of petroleum-based fertilizer (over-)use, the dangers of factory-farming monoculture, the labor issues involved in industrial agriculture, etc. The environmental implications are obvious, and despite our government's 'best' interventions, the end of cheap oil is near. Eating local is one of the most important environmental and political steps (among many others) we can take toward a more sustainable future.
