New Urban Ecology Journal debuts in May 2006

From Boston College's EcoEagle:

The Urban Ecology Institute at Boston College (UEI) is an Environmental Studies Program partner that stays on the cutting edge of research in the urban sciences. It is an organization that studies urban ecosystems, provides information to residents and policymakers, and works with Boston schools to protect and restore urban natural resources. In order to facilitate the rapid dissemination of research in urban ecology and education, The Urban Ecology Collaborative, of which UEI is a member, is publishing Cities and the Environment, an on-line academic journal, which debuts May 2006.

Cities and the Environment will provide a forum for urban researchers and practitioners to explore ecological theory, share relevant data and exchange best practices. Targeted areas include the biophysical, social and educational aspects of understanding urban ecosystem dynamics, urban management, landscape transformation and educational programs. The journal will contain articles that contribute to a broad and holistic understanding of urban natural resources and the human stakeholders who live there. It will feature two fundamental domains of scholarship: Urban Ecology Research and Urban Environmental Education. Each section will include pieces with a strong theoretical focus and others aimed at applied research. The intention is to provide a novel scholarly environment where a broad audience can find common ground and exchange ideas and findings that contribute to positive urban transformations and educational interventions.

The study of urban ecology is a new and emerging field. Cities and the Environment, as a publication focused on a revolutionary approach to environmentalism that celebrates the city, will be a great asset to Boston College students. By establishing the journal, our program will be a leading force for urban environmental research, which will bolster the resources we can provide to students interested in urban ecological research. It will provide opportunities for additional course work, independent research, internships, and employment for our students.

Cities and the Environment will be launched this summer at the Northeast Urban Resources Online Network (NEURON) conference, which will be held at Boston College May 31-June 1st, 2006. Look for more information coming soon at www.CATEjournal.org.
