As if things couldn't get worse in the Rust Belt, the Big Three have announced nearly 60,000 job cuts this past week in Detroit. Michigan has been having a rough time these past six years- and things don't look like they're about to get any better. Will the State and Detroit be able to use this time of failure and strife to build new opportunities? Or will more people leave Michigan to head south, east and west?
If you ever want to see what happens to a city when it has been abandoned from the inside-out, check out the Ruins of Detroit. Trully, an excellent lesson in Urban Ecology. In fact, I visited Detroit once with someone who just immigrated to the US from war torn Colombia. She looked at me with disgust and said, "Qué fea [la ciudad]."
